The following is a rant about Nintendo and the videogame industry now days in general :'I Warning its a big wall of texts, Nintendo.. water u doing....
I might as well begin with an apology for a journal I posted half a year ago back in December 2012 about the misleading fun and joy I had with the Wii U. I say misleading because at the time yes I was having lots of fun with games like New Super Mario Brothers Wii U and Scribblenauts Unlimited and Nintendoland. And sure! They were great fun, I mean those are games that I have finished already (after like a month, cos its so freakin easy! Difficulty level where did you go) but I might still one day go back to it and replay it from the beginning just for fun's sake, but then now what..? Its mid May 2013 and there hasn't been any new games that ain't either cross platform or ones I ain't interested in. And trust me if the Wii U game is cross platform I would definately get the PS3 or 360 version because
1) The controller's more comfortable, the Wii U controller is way too big and takes up too much power with the constant screen being turned on, and I ain't spending another $60 for a Wii U Pro Controller.
2) If I am to play the game online there would be a much larger community, with fighting games like Injustice Gods Among Us for example. NOW, OK SO WHAT THE F HAPPENED TO SMASH BRO AND ZELDA AND MARIO KART? Its been half a year and not a single announcement about their most anticipated titles? I don't wanna sound like a bitch but with the announcement of Xbox One and PS4 being announced, things ain't looking too good for the future of Nintendo. To me it seems like the Wii U wasn't ready in the first place (And you can tell by the lack of games) but Nintendo got the news that PS4 and Xbox One are being announced soon so Nintendo quickly released the console to try to rack up some sales. T.T' I just feel the Nintendo customers aint being treated right.. For one the Wii U's system feels like a PS3 360 console to me, it does not feel like it belongs to as the same gen as PS4 and Xbox One.. AND THIS HAS HAPPENED before with the Wii comparing with PS3 and 360 do you remember? The Wii Graphics feel like it belonged to the PS2 and Xbox era..
BUT THE WII DID IN FACT DO VERY WELL! How come? Well firstly you got the 1st party stuff like Mario and Mario Kart and Smash Bro and Zelda, all the usual sellers. But the Wii-mote motion controls is what made the sales go well, whether its actually FUN to wave your controller around for hours is debatable. But the thing is family members can get involved you know? Its a great party console its true, even my grandma at age 70 played Wii during family gathering. And during the early days of the PS3 360 Wii era yes Wii was the ONLY CONSOLE with this type of motion control. So good job Nintendo on the Wii, it was very innovative and a great gimmick (Yes I called it a gimmick), but what now? Are you gonna use the same gimmick to try to sell the Wii U? Well YES NINTENDO DID EXACTLY THAT. Except this time with an extra screen on your controller (Which I found absolutely no purpose for in the games I like to play on the Wii U). Did the Wii U sell well? Nope! I've been reading sales numbers and the Wii U did
HORRIBLY, the only thing keeping Nintendo alive from this poor performance is the fantastic DS sales and the 3DS which also didn't do too bad. So why didn't the same tactic work for Wii U that worked so well for the Wii? Cos its the same freakin gimmick, many families already has a Wii and the Wii U really hasn't got anything new to show. Not to mention the PS3 and 360 also followed the Wii's success and followed the motion control path, so its not even that big of a deal to wave your arms in front of the TV like an asshole anymore. Not to mention the BIGGEST FLAW of the Wii U,
THE GAMES. Nintendo needs to realise.. no I rephrase.. VIDEO GAME COMPANIES needs to realise that no matter how many motion control gimmick or how amazing the graphics are or how well your console can protect itself from a nuclear attack or whatever, ITS THE GAMES THAT KEEPS A GAMER HAPPY. OK so the Xbox One got revealed two days ago, they had like an hour and a half conference to cover it. and it was boring as F for a gamer, without going into too much details pretty much they spent VERY little time talking about gaming and a lot of time about improving your TV experience and sports and talking about a Halo TV series and how the Xbox One can play blu-ray (which I find very funny cos Microsoft has to pay Sony to get a blu-ray player in their console). Anyway my point is this, it seems like the trend right now is video game companies want to put as many bullshit stuff onto their console as possible, so it can be a freakin multi-purpose box in your living room, I wouldn't be surprised if they give the console the ability to bake pies and make coffee. Why? Well the most obvious is that fact that now MANY games are cross platformed, so how do you beat your competitors? You just have to keep adding extra shit to your console so when customers compare the two, they would pick one with more shit. But also for another reason, the parents. All these extra features are there so that the parents can feel like they are not just getting a gaming console for their child but rather something that the whole family can make use of. Thats why Microsoft spent 3/4 of the conference talking about all these features we gamers don't give a shit about, sure the core users of the consoles are gonna be kids and teenagers, but who has the money to pay for all these? The parents. Thats their strategy.
Ok so thats Xbox One and PS4 with their money making scheme. But what about Wii U? It doesn't play Blu-ray.. HELL it doesn't even play DVD. What's going on Nintendo? Well thats the thing with Nintendo.. they always do things their way. I don't know if they are geniuses or idiots, but from looking back at the older consoles it seems that they always find a way to get away with it. I don't know if its the loyal fans they have or what, I mean they DO have a long history with games and everyone knows and love Mario so maybe thats why Nintendo is still doing ok? So who knows maybe Wii U can pull some magic later on. Perhaps
MORE GAMES MAYBE? I even had to buy the crossed platform Sonic All Star Racing Transformed for the Wii U instead of the PS3 version just so that my Wii U won't be sitting there collecting dust. Great game Sonic All Star Racing Transformed by the way. But other than that yeah my Wii U ain't being played at all. And I just feel a bit betrayed you know? I bought the Wii U on the first day of its release, Im a loyal fan right? And now half a year in and Nintendo's been quiet about any new games. So you know what? I went back to playing the PS3, its as simple as that. But I know not everyone are spoiled like me with freakin every console ever to satisfy my gamer need, maybe some of you are only allowed one console and you got the Wii U from your parents for xmas. Well.. patience is the key I guess. I don't like what Nintendo is doing now, but I know they do care about their fans, even IF money is all they care about, they still have a reputation to live up to... although thats starting to decline too with the whole blocking youtuber's profit plan.. omg it seems like everything Nintendo does now days is getting people more and more angry. It just seems like Nintendo has too much of an ego and think that no matter what they do, the fans will like it no matter what... BUT YOU KNOW WHAT? Time will tell. AND I REALLY HOPE I AM WRONG ABOUT NINTENDO. Maybe at E3 they will announce all the big titles with a release date... I dunno.. I mean then again many game companies are skipping the Wii U.. maybe they are not sure if Wii U is worth it?
Oh I AM quite happy about ONE freakin game they announced though. Scribblenauts Unmasked, I hope its as fun as the last Scribblenauts. FINALLY MY WII U WILL BE PLAYED AGAIN.
