I don't know if you guys know this but Im actually an Asian living in Australia. And there's always something from my family that ticks me off, and it's how they always view themselves as an outsider living in a foreign country. My father especially, would always say 'We Asians bla bla bla' and 'The westerners bla bla bla'. Nothing too racist but always drawing a line between the Asians and everyone else who doesn't have black hair and HD widescreen eyes. Very often we would be watching something random on TV and as soon as there's an Asian or mention of Asian, my parents would turn into meerkats sitting right up and bringing their full attention to it. They would be like "OMG its an Asian!" and try to listen closely, sometimes even turning the volume up to find out what is going on. Like as if to find out whether the Aussies are making fun of the Asians. And when there's an Asian in movies, even just a not important character who only appears in the movie for 5 minutes, my dad would try to find out who that person is. An example is when I was watching Scott Pilgrim vs The World with my dad, straight after the movie he asked me who the Asian actress is... didn't talk about whether he enjoyed the movie or not, didn't ask about anything else, just asked about the Asian, I said I have no clue... Its like.. Why not ask about the main characters? Why not ask about Michael Cera? Or Mary Elizabeth Winstead who played a fantastic Ramona Flowers? I don't understand why so fascinated in a character just because the color of their skin matches yours. Then on TV if theres a reality shows with an Asian in it, like Master Chef for example, my dad would be supporting the Asian! The Asian could be a terrible contestant but my dad would be like 'Yup she is one of us. I gotta support her'.

*SIGHHHDUCK* Its like they always make comparisons and have these stereotypical ideas about westerners and how they act, but to be honest we are not that different from each other, especially in this day and age. I remember at one point I had an Australian girlfriend and I brought her home for dinner a few times, my mum did the cooking. By the way my Aussie girlfriend at the time was familiar with Asian food, in fact lets be honest here, I think in OUR generation, we are probably ALL very multicultural in the food we eat right? We have pizzas, ramen, sushi, curry, burgers, all sorts of different food from different nationality, and this has become everyday food for us am I right? Anyway, my mother in all her wisdom INSISTED on making western style food for the lady, the mother for reasons I did not understand decided to add LOTS of tomatoes onto her plate, not a lot on my plate but like mountains of it onto her plate. So happen, my girlfriend didn't like tomatoes lol, but she didn't wanna be rude, so she would force herself to eat some and then when I see my parents looking away I would take it off her plate and eat it before they notice. This went on for quite a bit until one day I couldn't help but ask my mother why she adds so much tomato onto my girlfriend's plate. Well, she explains, she says that in Chinese the word tomato means 'Western Vegetable', and so since my girlfriend is a westerner, she must love it... At that point I just face palmed myself, I didn't know whether I should cry or laugh at this.

Just one more thing, when I tell my parents im going out with friends, my dad would ask 'what kinda people are they?' i used to get really confused at the question. I would answer 'Good people...?' and then I later find out what my dad was trying to ask was 'Are they Chinese?'.

We are not so different you and I! Anyway Im wondering, do YOUR parents do this? Like give extra attention to people that has same skin color as them? I wouldn't use the word 'racist' because they ain't mocking other cultures or anything but just always stereotyping cultures and thinking we are all very different. Please comment below Im curious to hear. Ry-Spirit cares.

nah its not my parents that do it its mainly just me and my brother. we asians in the west ought to look out for each other because other races sure as fuck arent going to do it. treating everyone equally except for giving your own tribe special care is not evil behaviour to me.
