AND I RANT! CHINESE TRADITIONS PT 2

Journal Entry: Tue May 29, 2012, 9:02 AM

Where was I? Oh yeah thats right there's MORE chinese traditions/practices that annoys the living hell out of me. You can read part 1 here ry-spirit.deviantart.com/journ… . Alright here goes.

SAY HELLO TO YOUR THIRD UNCLE'S WIFE'S MOTHER'S BROTHER'S SON'S STEP SISTER'S CAT'S COUSIN'S FATHER'S OWNER'S DAUGHTER'S SECOND BROTHER: Thats me in the middle (Not really) reading a book with a lot of relatives looking at me with their creepy faces. The thing is that all of those uncles has different unique titles, like 2nd uncle, 3rd uncle, 4th uncle. Then it can get more complicated like 2nd uncle's son, 3rd uncle's daughter. Then it can get even more complicated when you have to remember the title for relatives like your uncle's son's wife's mother's brother! And trust me even a complicated link like that has a unique title in chinese, and I am supposed to remember the title... Oh by the way as a duty from the youngest person in the family, when you meet them for dinners you must address your complicated linked relatives by their titles as greetings, EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM!!! But no the adults don't have to do that for other relatives (NOT FAIR)... FFFFFFFFF..... Sometimes I just wish the chinese family could learn from the westerners, by calling everyone by their names. Simple and clean!

FIGHT FOR THE BILL Its common for chinese people to get nervous when its time to pay for the bill in chinese restaurant, suddenly the whole table goes silent.. then someone will shout 'I will pay for dinner.' then another will go 'NO I WILL PAY FOR IT, DON'T ARGUE WITH ME' then across the table someone will go 'SHUT YOUR HOLE! YOU PAID LAST TIME, I AM PAYING THIS TIME OR I AM NEVER EAT WITH YOU AGAIN' and another will pull out a gun and go 'SUCK MY BALLS! THE BILL IS ON ME BECAUSE I AM THE OLDEST HERE!!'. Then eventually it becomes a race to the counter with everyone pulling out their wallet and placing money on the bill while pushing the other people out of the way...... Every single time we go out to dinner we have these fights I ain't joking. Sometimes someone will do the sneaky act of pretending to go to toilet and then secretly pay for the bill, I like those tricky people, it avoids embarrassment.. especially when you ain't eating at a chinese restaurant and the waiter and customers are like what the flying heck is going on here... GOOD JOB SNEAKY PEOPLE!

RARE ANIMALS = HEALTHY MAGICAL FOOD The image above is snake soup by the way... If it has made you uncomfortable in anyway then I apologize... This topic is probably the most controversial... all the other points I made was all like laughable and making fun of silly practices, but when I hear about people killing sharks just for their fins, killing snakes for soup, killing even the cutest looking dog for their meat! OMG gimme a minute.. I need to wipe tears off my beautiful face. OK confession! I have eaten snake soup before (I guess I can call myself a SNAKE EATER! Hello Metal Gear fans), I was young and just followed what adults do... I regret it heaps after I found out that some of the snakes are being close to extinction. And I have eaten shark fins as well..... I can feel my tummy aching as I am typing this, usually shark fins are expensive and hard to get... which in turns makes chinese want to eat it more. The thing is, there's a believe that the rarer something is, the more healthy it is, even to the point of having magical healing abilities. Now these has no scientific proof what so ever! In fact after further investigations people are saying shark fin has a chance of containing mercury as well, meaning you may even get mercury poisoning and dying from it! You know what the deal is? Its all about money making, they try to make the rare food seems all healthy with exaggerated protein percentage and saying how hunters has to go to a far away land and kill a dragon to get those rare magical bird eggs, and people are stupid enough to believe that therefore it makes the food double in protein and worth every penny. *Sigh* But I'm glad to hear that recently Hong Kong has banned Shark Fins *Joy*, eventhough in some underground restaurants you can still get them.. and even dog meat I ain't joking... ARRGGGHHH, when there are puppies involved it becomes personal! I can stand children and women dying in movies, but if a dog dies I would cry like bitch. *ANGRYFACE*

Hahahaha lol!!!

Yeah, there are a lot of people say that Chinese have a lot of unique traditions and they admired it. They just don't know! Some of the traditions are annoying.

Well, actually I didn't experience those traditions (my family is not really into old tradition, but they still follow feng shui or whatever it is. And sometimes it's annoying --).

Actually what I hate most is that Chinese eat with their mouths open and make disgusting sounds like "chpp nymmp" etc and sometimes, but not so rare, there are food that go out from their mouth!! Like for example, rice, spurt to the table/plates/their own lips (if you're lucky), or even on you!! (if you're unlucky). Can you imagine how disgusting it is? Food from other's mouth half chewed and covered with saliva. Yuck. :&

But seriously, I think it's funny to see them want to pay. Just pretend that you want to pay but at least let them pay :D

And I don't know why they like to eat rare animals. Yup, they're expensive, but it taste yuck!! (Sometimes I don't like the food but I am forced to eat it because it's expensive :'()

The top one actually happened to me last summer when I was in China with my family! My dad has a lot of siblings (2 sisters, one in LA, and not including him 4 brothers); I do remember meeting one of his brothers. I have a niece, and apparently I have a step-sister who's married and has a girl who's nearly the same age as my niece...

so....yeah.

Sometimes we have fightings over bill paying too! It mostly happens when old people is involved, they will do anything to pay the whole food ordering. Youngest people believe they have to pay just their own bill so it gets confusing.
And about animal killing, I dont mind eating animal as long as is killed without cruelty and there are enough members of its species... In my country we have many sea turtles visiting our coasts every year, and many of them are about to get extinct. Even though we know that, a lot of turtle eggs are collected and sold, but it is also known that the porcentage of egg hatching is very low (because of climate, waves, a turtle lay eggs over other turtle´s...) so its fine. But sharks, snakes, alligators and many other species dont have this faculty, so I would never in life would allow this practice >___<

Okay, I've just read these journals. I'm not gonna bash Chinese culture in particular... it's just that I hate culture in general. It usually solely makes you do (mostly foolish) things you'd only do because someone else in the past did 'em for no fucking reason at all.

"Why shall I do that?" - "Because it's a sacred tradition!" - "Why is it a sacred tradition?" - "BECAUSE IT'S A SACRED TRADITION!"

There is no need for further elaboration, lol. This definitely happens in my family except eating strange animals, that is. People say, eat feet and get better eat. Eat eyes and you'll have better eyes- I'm like wth.

The name thing is rather ridiculous as well. Westerners just use unce and aunt and not what we have. -_-

Usually, when I'm out with my sister she'll usually say "Wanna stop for food?"
and the first thing I say is "Depends. You payin'?"

and then she sighs, and I get a free meal!

Actually most of snakes are quite good for your skin, you just need to dry it instead of cooking it and eat it like that.

In some parts of the world it is quite a common practice to feed animals some dried snakes for them to get better skin condition. And I'm not talking about Asian cultures where most rare animals are magical, more of a mountain nations that once belonged to soviet union(some still are part of Russia), there is enough snakes for everyone and then some.

Actually I would love to try some more rare animals as food myself, just to know how they taste, FOR SCIENCE!

I don't mind if people like or want to eat snake or dogs, that is sculptural difference that we must respect, but if the anomalous endangered then is irresponsible and shows lack of conscience. This happen in my country with the "carey" , an ocean turtle that is illegal but curiously some of my friends told me about how they eat it..... Sad. All cultures have traditions that do not make sense, that is very common.

Kudos to making a nod to one of the greatest comedy films of the last century.

"Before you die, there's something you should know about us Lone Star."

"What?"

"I am your father's brother's nephew's cousin's former roommate!"

"What's that make us?"

"ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!"

lol one thing i hate about chinese traditions (well more like culture now) is their lack of sympathy/empathy for others :/ I dont know if you remember that story of the old lady who fell over and no one helped her up? Or when the baby got run over and everyone just pretended not to see? It's just so sad that no one is bothering to help others in fear that they will be involved =__=;;

YES, bless you. All of these things. I swear when I went back to China last summer I was amazed by the sheer amount of relatives I had. At least a dozen of cousins, billions of aunts, uncles, and great grand parents. I still can't remember my connections with them at all.

Second one was annoying too >_> At some points it seemed like everyone's about to break into a fist fight for the right to pay the bill. What's even more annoying is very often, no-one actually WANTS to pay, they're just doing it for the appearances.

Third one also brings a person experience because I lived near a mountain with a actual forest. There used to be tonnes of different snakes on that mountain (maybe not so nice but still). Then some fancy hotel moved next to the mountain and BOOM, they started catching the snake to make food for their costumers. After three years there were like, no snakes left on the mountain. AT ALL. /sighs People don't seem to realize these things aren't nutritious at all, and it's even worse when they use it as 'magical medicine'... I was once forced to eat snake skin as medicine since my grandparents believed it would cure some illness I had, it was awful.

all in all, I talk too much and you're an awesome person as well as artist. >_<

Although I'm not Chinese, I'm Japanese and I'll be honest..
I have eaten Shark Fin Soup before (And it tasted quite good. TTuTT)
But at the time I didn't know much about the problems, like I just went with the adults like you did.
Atleast the newer generations of Asian countries have enough...
Uh, knowledge/awareness? idkLOL. regarding the precaution and preservation of these animals. >_>
The older generation is like NO. IT DUH HELFY FO YEW, YOU MUST DUH EAT IT. BLAH BLAH.

I am Chinese (not 100% Chinese, since I have some Russian blood), and everything you said about the first and second topic is really true. I am not sure about third topic since most of the Chinese people that I know and around me, are becoming more health-conscious and aware about what is the food they are eating. XD

Whenever my family goes out with another Chinese family or someone, my dad sometimes pretend to go to the washroom to pay the meal for everyone. When you're eating out with people especially if they are Chinese, if you pay first, you show that you are polite and courteous in front of everyone and you won't owe anyone a favor. You don't want to owe anyone a favor especially if the person is Chinese (He/she will remember the time he/she paid for your meal). That's why a lot of Chinese people fight for the bill when they go out to eat with others.

I am not offended by the rants that you made and you do make some good points about Chinese traditions.
I can't wait to see more if you plan on making part 3.

What I don't get is why they don't just split the bill...
I had no idea of the paying the bill thing when I went to Hong Kong and somehow unknowingly let my friends mum pay the bill without comment and I felt kinda bad, then someone told me everyone shouts everyone else but I still felt bad =.= What's wrong with people just paying for themselves?
I think in my family though the challenge is to come off as wanting to pay the bill but ultimately get off free XD

Uhg, the thousand relative thing. My mom's side had it unfortunately (rather unfortunately as well, my dad was the only living family left, and I would have preferred his family over my moms). When I was trying to work here in Guam, a relative from her side (her sister's cousin's brother whatever) suddenly came in from Cali to live with us and I'm all "WHO THE FUCK ARE YOU WHAT THE HELL". Luckily, filipino tradition doesn't require proper titles (or names for that matter- people must me fuckin trippin to expect me to remember everyone's name) to address family members- everyone is all "uncle" and "aunt" to me unless they're significantly older, then you just refer to them as "lola" (grandma) or "lolo" (grandpa).

Unfortunately shark fin is rather widespread. I've eaten shark fin dumplings but personally don't find them extraordinary. I don't like it either that sharks are being hacked for their fins and then just left crippled. Its about as unnecessary and stupid as snake or tiger apparently giving you testicular powers, to justify hunting and eating them.

The bill...I think that's one thing I never had a problem with. Be a pimp- let them pay for it. >3>

...ha... I know that...
My mom's just the same (both, on tables and sneaky) and I have to admit, I'm too :D
But to be honest, it's no harsh fight in our situations, it's more a kind of (trying to) beeing polite and generous, and it's mostly like:
"I pay."
"No, not again... I pay this time."
"No. I pay."
"*sigh* ...ok... >.<"
...on both sides sometimes ;D

On the last part...
That's why I'm a vegetarian. Dogs are cute. Sheeps, Cows, Pigs etc are too.
I btw find it more horrible that animals are killed for just a part of their body (like Shark FINS), and even left behind unkilled and brutally die in vain and also when animals who're getting eaten had a cruel life of small captivity beforehand... and (nothing against you of course) especially from china I hear so brutal stories about animal fates, that I can't even stand listen to them... also for fur, not only for eating purposes...
It's sickening...

btw, I found Dance with the Wolves extremly boring and uncarring, but be sure I was depressed and crying as socks died... >.<

Fighting over the bill.... our family had the worst problem with that XD; My mom's side anyway. Grandpa refused to let anyone pay their own bill, using the sneak off method to pay for all of the tickets. I didn't like it, because I always felt I was imposing on my grandparents for having them pay my bills. XD; I shouldn't complain, but it always felt dirty, as I had more than one people leave me with their tab (and I dislike people who do that worse than those who fight to pay the bill XD; ) I just feel I should contribute something. We eventually found out why my grandpa does pay the bill all the time, though, and though it feels rude not to offer, it does help him out ^^;
